Happy New Year! Believe What God Says About You…

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. ~ Ephesians 2:10

We spend so much time believing what people say about us, especially, the negative stuff! “You’re lazy.” “You’ll never amount to anything.” “You’re just like that no-good scumbag.” And on and on the belittling, mean-spirited, unkind words spew out. Hurtful words from our adversaries and sometimes even from friends and family.

Some of us have heard these kinds of comments so often that we’ve started to say them about ourselves. And while we’re not perfect and have room for improvement. . . let’s put things in perspective.

In 2023, let’s affirm our identity in Jesus Christ! Below is a list of some biblical affirmations confirming what God says about us as compared to what people might say about us. This is just a portion of the many biblical truths about who we are—powerful knowledge to review from time to time—particularly on this New Year’s Day.

  • “You’re a nobody.”  God says, “I am His child.” (John 1:12)
  • “You’ll never get well.” God says, “I am healed.” (Isaiah 53:5)
  • “You’re weak.” God says, “I am strong.” (Psalm 18:32)
  • “We remember your sins.”  God says, “My sins are forgiven.” (1 John 2:12)
  • “Everyone’s abandoned you.” God says, “I am adopted.” (Ephesians 1:5)
  • “You’re broken.” God says, “I am made whole.” (1 Thessalonians 5:23-28)
  • “You’re all alone.” God says, “He is always with me.” (Joshua 1:9)
  • “You’re hopeless.”  God says, “Because of Him, I am hopeful.” (Jeremiah 29:11)
  • “You got no purpose.” God says, “I was created with a purpose.” (Esther 4:14)
  • “You’re a failure.” God says, “I am victorious in Christ.” (1 Corinthians 15:57)
  • “You’ve no direction.”  God says, “He gives me direction.” (Isaiah 30:21)
  •  “You’re always worried, anxious, or afraid.” God says, “With Him I am peace-filled.” (John 14:27)
  • “You’re always begging.” God says, “I am the lender and not the borrower.” (Deuteronomy 15:6)
  • “You’re ugly.” God says, “I am made in His image.” (Genesis 1:26-28)
  • “You’re sad and unhappy”. God says, “I am filled with His joy.” (John 15:11)
  • “You’re pathetic, despicable, and crazy.”  God says, “I am powerful, loved, and have a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7)
  • “You’re nothing special.” God says, “I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” (Psalm 139:14)
  • “You’re worthless.” God says, “Jesus died because I am worth it.”(John 3:16)

After reading this list, we can see that we should not allow others to talk to us negatively. While they may not know who we are in Jesus Christ. . . We must always affirm our identity according to whom God says we are.

Therefore, let’s commit to believing what God says about us as we grow in grace and favor to prosper in this new year. Happy New Year!
